I can't think of any animal that represents the American West more than the Bison.   Their speed and agility is awe-inspiring when you consider the size of this magnificent creature.   Years ago while photographing in the valleys at Yellowstone I would walk up to them very slowly so I could get a sense of their size.    I certainly don't do that now and strongly suggest no one try it but it left a life long impression on me and a deep appreciation for them and their place in our history.   This old bull has weathered many battles and is getting near the end of his days.    Prior to the mass slaughter of the 1800's they passed through this valley, near Massacre Rocks in Southeast Idaho.   As you look at the high bluffs you can imagine how it must have been to look down on several thousand bison for the various American Indian tribes that occupied this area.
